本片主人公“张博士”经常出现在各种媒体上。他在1966年文革被迫退学后在重庆的工厂自学了17年，又在成都“四川大学外语系”旁听了17年，为的是实现他从小的理想“去俄罗斯当翻译”。这期间他靠在大学食堂打扫清洁艰难度日，住得是学校操场看台下放石灰的小屋。2002年，“四川省农业厅”开始在“四川大学外语系”选择一些学俄语的学生，以劳务输出的形式去俄罗斯做翻译。快50岁的“张博士”四处打听到消息后，开始与“四川省农业厅”联系，也想通过劳务输出去俄罗斯，并认为这是他人生唯一的出路。
在农业厅的勉强同意下，被要求“张博士”先办理“劳务输出政治审查表”以证明身份。“张博士”开始不断往返重庆和成都终于完成了表。终于可以回到重庆开始申请护照，在等护照的过程中“张博士”去了河北的一家电视台录制节目,换取了500元的劳务费，交了护照的工本费。等“张博士”拿到护照高兴的回到成都，却遭到“四川省农业厅”责怪，认为“张博士”是因为去做节目而耽误了和学生一起走的机会。“张博士”找到了他的朋友去农业厅了解、说情，又来到一家俄罗斯风格的夜总会门外的列宁像前求拜，希望能得到帮助，最后也只得到了一个继续等待的结果。这时学校已不允许“张博士”在食堂打工，学生都已离开了“四川大学”去了俄罗斯，天空也下起了小雨，“张博士”经常走过的满是茶馆的胡同也已经被拆除，“张博士”家门口本班驳的墙已被粉刷一新，从新写上了新的标语。“张博士”又回到了原来的生活轨迹—旁听，锻炼身体，洗冷水澡。
一天，也许是上天特别的怜悯，“张博士”突然接到了可以去俄罗斯的电话。他开始满心欢喜的准备行李，从北京转车到二连浩特。终于登上了去俄罗斯的火车。
本片拍摄素材100小时，多次往返成都，重庆，北京，二连浩特，制作时间为一年半，成片长度为110分钟。
Synopsis
The hero of the film, Dr. Zhang, used to appear in all kinds of media. In 1966, at the beginning of the “Great Culture Revolution”, he was forced to quit school and he began to teach himself for 17 years. And then, he audited in Foreign language Dept., Sichuan University for 17 years. He did all this to realize his dream of “going to Russia to be an interpreter” since he was a kid. When he was auditing in Sichuan University, he strove for a living by doing cleaning for the refectories in the University. He lived in a little room under the playground stand, where the lime was stored. In 2002, “Sichuan Agriculture Bureau” began to choose some Russian major students of the university to go to Russia as overseas-labour. The almost 50 year old Dr. Zhang started to contact the Bureau after he heard this. He dreamed to go to Russia and thought that it was the only out for him.
The Bureau reluctantly permitted. Dr. Zhang was asked to certify his social status by getting the “political investigation chart for overseas-labour”. Dr. Zhang began his trips between Chengdu and Chongqing and finally managed to get that and the passport. When he was waiting for the issuing of the passport, he went to a TV station in Hebei province to attend a talk show and got 500 yuan to pay for his passport. When he came back to Chengdu gayly with the passport, he was blamed by the Bureau for that he went to the talk show and wasted the opportunity of going with the students. Dr. Zhang found some friends to go to the Bureau to check out what was happening and say a word for him. He went to a Russian style night-club to pray for help in front of the sculpture of Lenin. Finally he got the result of waiting. Then, the university forbade his work in the refectory, and the students all left for Russia, and it was raining. The lane through which he usually passed was pulled down. Out of his “home”, the wall was whitewashed and put on slogans. Dr. Zhang returned to the former orbit---auditing, exercising, taking cold-water-shower.
One day, maybe due to the God’s mercy, Dr. Zhang got a phone call that he could go to Russian then. He began to pack up happily, from Beijing to Er’lianhaote, and boarded the train to Russia.
The fodder is 100 hours, I traveled many times among Chengdu, Chongqing, Beijing and Er’lianhaote in 1 and half years. The film is 110 minutes.
