“蜷缩之辈”当代艺术展

"Cowering People"
A group exhibition of contemporary art, entitled "Cowering People" will be held at the Yan Club Arts Centre, within the 798 Art District, from September 17 to October 7, 2005. Curated by the famous Chinese art critic, Mr. Li Xianting, this exhibition features the works of four artists: Ma Yue, Yin Kun, Ban Xuejian and Piao Guangxie.
这几位不算年轻的艺术家出生于60年代末或70年代初，无论在艺术领域的探索和个人命运的挣扎上，他们都进行了十几年的努力，现在，他们已步入中年，英雄主义和少年气盛时的凌云壮志早已离他们远去，个人命运的难以把握和对当今时代的茫然使他们在精神上"蜷缩"回个人的内心世界，企图在迷失状态中找到自己的真实存在。
All four of these artists were born either towards the end of the 1960s or at the beginning of the 1970s. Having all worked hard for over a decade, striving in their personal lives and exploring different artistic realms, these middle-aged men now show a sense of maturity - aspirations of heroism and youth have long gone. With no control over their destiny and being ignorant about the modern world around them, these artists have been forced to look within themselves to discover their true identity and existence.
"蜷缩"意旨在强大的意识形态和喧嚣的时代背景中，个人在强势力量的挤压下做出的种种被迫反应：无奈、屈从、逃避或自我慰抚。虽然他们的作品中也有自嘲和幽默的一面，但更多地表现出弱势群体面对存在境遇的本能反应。这也是"玩世"之后的无奈和"玩世"也是"被玩"的真实写照。从这个意义上说，"蜷缩之辈"正是玩世现实主义之后的"蜷缩现实主义"。
"Cowering" is used to here to mean that in the light of overwhelming ideology and uproarious times, one is under strong pressure to react differently - to have no alternatives, to yield, to escape or be self-consoling. Although these works contain a sense of self-mockery and humour, they also convey the instinctive reactions of weaker people towards their living environment. This is a true reflection of cynicism. From this viewpoint, "Cowering People" symbolises "cowering realism".

The opening reception for the exhibition will be held from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Yan Club Arts Centre on Saturday, September 17, 2005. The opening will also feature a modern dance show entitled, "Dance of the Cowering People".
